Jasmine Paolini pulled off a stunning comeback victory against Donna Vekic in a thrilling three-set semifinal match at Wimbledon.

Vekic took the opening set 6-2, but Paolini fought back to level the match by winning the second set 6-4.  The decider was a nail-biter, with both players trading breaks and holding serve under immense pressure.  Paolini saved multiple match points before prevailing in the tiebreaker 8-6 to clinch the victory.

Paolini’s powerful groundstrokes, variety, and resilience proved too much for Vekic in the end.  Despite Vekic’s strong serving, including 28 aces, Paolini’s relentless return game and ability to win the big points were the difference.  Paolini converted 56% of her break point opportunities, compared to just 37% for Vekic.

This result marks Paolini’s best-ever Grand Slam performance, as she reaches her second major final.  The 29th-ranked Italian has now defeated Vekic in 3 of their 4 career meetings.  Vekic’s run to the semifinals, however, is still a significant achievement, especially after contemplating retirement earlier this year due to injuries.

Paolini will now face either Elena Rybakina or Barbora Krejcikova in the Wimbledon final on Saturday, as she seeks to capture her maiden Grand Slam title.  Her impressive display of mental toughness and shot-making ability has made her a fan favorite and a rising star in women’s tennis.
